The Baroque Era: 3 Important Composers

Let’s talk about the Baroque period and three of the most famous composers from that time. The Baroque era was a time when music was filled with grandeur and drama, and it’s characterized by the use of complex harmonies, intricate counterpoints, and bold rhythms.

First up, Johann Sebastian Bach. He’s considered one of the greatest composers of all time and his works, such as the Brandenburg Concertos and the Mass in B Minor, are known for their technical virtuosity and emotional depth. As you learn piano, you’ll find that Bach’s music challenges you and helps you grow as a musician through its intricate counterpoint and use of fugues, a complex musical form that features a repeated melody or theme.

Next up is George Frideric Handel. He was a German-born composer who lived in England. He is famous for his operas and oratorios like “Messiah” and “Saul” which are known for their grandeur and drama. Handel’s music is big and beautiful, often played by large orchestras and choirs, and he also uses some of the same styles as Bach like the fugue and concerto grosso. Fun fact: Handel wrote “Messiah” in only 24 days!

Lastly, we have Antonio Vivaldi who is well-known for his concertos like “The Four Seasons”, “The Storm” and “The Night.” His music is often exciting and energetic. Vivaldi’s music is known for its lively rhythms and use of virtuosic solo parts which let the players show off. Fun fact: Vivaldi wrote a whole bunch of concertos, over 500 to be exact, most of them were for the violin!

To wrap things up, the Baroque period was a time when music was grand and dramatic, and these three composers: Bach, Handel and Vivaldi, were some of the most important figures of that time.
